TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS) FOR VENEZUELA AND HAITI

Venezuela:
On February 1, 2025, the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, decided to terminate TPS under the 2023 designation for Venezuelan nationals.
In October 2023, the United States designated Venezuela for TPS, allowing eligible Venezuelan nationals to stay temporarily due to unsafe conditions in their home country. This designation was initially set to expire on April 2, 2025. However, after reassessing the situation and consulting with government agencies, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security has determined that Venezuela no longer meets the conditions for TPS.
As a result, the 2023 TPS designation for Venezuela will officially end on April 7, 2025. After this date, Venezuelans who were granted TPS under the 2023 designation will no longer have that protection.
It's important to note that this termination does not affect Venezuelans covered under the 2021 TPS designation, which remains in effect until September 10, 2025. Those who registered under the 2021 designation can still maintain their TPS status for now.
This decision marks a significant policy shift, potentially impacting many Venezuelan nationals living in the U.S. Stay informed for further updates as legal and policy discussions continue.
Haiti:
On February 20, 2025, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced a change to the TPS designation for Haiti, reducing the extension period from 18 months to 12 months. This means that instead of expiring on February 3, 2026, Haiti’s TPS designation will now end on August 3, 2025.
This decision also affects the registration period for new applicants under the redesignation, which will now close on August 3, 2025, instead of the previously planned February 2026 deadline.
The change reverses part of a decision made on June 4, 2024, by former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which had granted an 18-month TPS extension to around 199,445 Haitian nationals and allowed approximately 321,349 additional Haitians to apply.
With this revision, individuals benefiting from the 2024 redesignation will now have a shorter period of TPS protection, and those seeking to apply must do so before the new August 3, 2025, deadline.
